नागर इतिहास का एक महत्वपूर्ण मोड़: ब्राह्मण से वणिक बनने की गाथा — भारतीय इतिहास में मुगलों और विदेशी आक्रांताओं के आक्रमणों ने कई सामाजिक और सांस्कृतिक बदलावों को जन्म दिया। ऐसा ही एक भीषण मोड़ वर्ष 1739 में आया, जब ईरानी शासक नादिर शाह ने दिल्ली पर आक्रमण किया। 22 मार्च 1739 को नादिर शाह के आदेश पर दिल्ली में 'कत्लेआम' शुरू हुआ, जिसमें सूर्योदय से लेकर सूर्यास्त तक एक ही दिन में लगभग 30,000 से अधिक निर्दोष नागरिकों की बेरहमी से हत्या कर दी गई। इस अत्यंत उथल-पुथल वाले काल और लगातार बढ़ते अत्याचारों के बीच, उच्च शिक्षित और पारंपरिक रूप से राज-सलाहकार व कर्मकांड से जुड़े 'नागर ब्राह्मणों' के सामने अपनी संस्कृति, जीवन और जीविकोपार्जन (रोजी-रोटी) की रक्षा का बड़ा संकट खड़ा हो गया। अपनी अस्मिता को बचाने के लिए नागर समुदाय के एक बड़े धड़े ने गुजरात और राजस्थान के अन्य क्षेत्रों में शरण ली। विषम परिस्थितियों के कारण उन्होंने पारंपरिक कर्मकांड को छोड़कर अपनी कुशाग्र बुद्धि का उपयोग व्यापार, कर प्रबंधन, लेखा-जोखा (Accountancy) और बैंकिंग व्यवस्था में करना शुरू किया। व्यवसाय और वाणिज्य में पूरी तरह संलिप्त हो जाने के कारण इतिहास के इस कालखंड में समाज का यह हिस्सा 'नागर वणिक' (व्यापारी) के रूप में स्थापित और विख्यात हुआ।
